Columnist Amy Vanderbilt says that if the wedding is cancelled, the gifts should be returned.
If the marriage breaks after the wedding, then the bride has a right to keep the gifts. The second wedding shouldn’t be large and friends aren’t obligated to give gifts — but people often send them any way.
