But as one woman recently learnt, it’s a whole lot more difficult when you also want to get the approval of a 14-year-old.
One woman took to Mumsnet to ask for advice on her choice of wedding dress
Over on Mumsnet, the woman shared a photo of herself in a dress that she’d picked out for her upcoming nuptials.
The mini – which she’d bought from Needle and Thread – featured frill detailing, sheer arms and pretty appliqué flowers.
Explaining that she was 47 and marrying for the second time, she wrote: “Getting married in three weeks, low key affair. Just the four kids and the two of us in a registry office.
“Bought a dress I love but 14-year-old daughter has said she hates it and I look like something from the 80s.”
The woman had picked this frock out – but her teenage daughter wasn’t a fan

The woman admitted that her daughter’s revelation had thrown her, continuing: “[It] has given me a crisis of confidence and thinking maybe this is the wrong choice!”
To add to her confusion, the dress really seemed to divide opinion among Mumsnet users.
Many thought it was a lovely choice, with comments including: “I love it, it’s gorgeous!” and: “I think it’s fabulous and really different.”
However, others weren’t so sure.
One person wrote: “Sorry I do not think it looks good on you at all, might be a lovely dress but it does nothing for you. I am so sorry to be saying this but it is not a good look.”
Another said: “I’m not keen but it’s your day and your dress you don’t need to please anyone but yourself.”
A few days later, the mum revealed that she’d picked a new dress
She found ‘The One’ on ASOS after another Mumsnet user suggested it
Some shared links to alternative dresses – which actually led the mum to order a second frock.
A few days later, she revealed that she’d settled on an entirely different piece, explaining: “Thank you all for the advice and impartial views. [I] have today tried a few of the styles suggested.
“Particular thanks to @FenellaMaxwellsPony. Your ASOS silver bridesmaid suggestion was delivered today and had the seal of approval from the 14-year-old – and I love it, so sold!”
Happily, it seems as though she made the right choice. After her big day, she wrote on the thread: “It was fantastic… Wedding dress was lovely after all the advice.”
We’re sure she would have looked gorgeous in either design, but it’s great that she found a piece she felt completely comfortable with.
