Diamond couple share advice for long and happy marriage – The Northern Echo
A DIAMOND couple say never letting the sun go down on an argument and an “occasional whisky” are the key to a happy marriage.
Glennis and William Skipsey met at a dance at Hull University in 1957 where Mr Skipsey said he noticed his wife because she was taller than the other girls.
The couple fell in love and married a year later on November 29, 1958, in their hometown of Hull.
They went on to have three children, Richard, Jane and Lesley and moved to York and London before settling in Barnard Castle to raise the children in 1972.
The adventurous couple also lived in France for 20 years before moving to Middleton-in-Teesdale in 2012.
Mr Skipsey, 88, said he had many fond memories and said he looked forward to the next ten years with his wife, 82.
The couple received a special card from the Queen and celebrated with family.
New wife worries about hubby’s ex connection – Detroit Free Press
Dear Amy: My husband had a long first marriage. He got divorced two years ago, and we started dating shortly after.
We have been married for over a year now, and we have a newborn daughter.
The problem is that my husband talks to and communicates all the time with his ex!
I confronted him about this and told him I was not confident about his choice to do that.
He said that she was a very important part of his life and that I need to wise up.
He said he has a lot of memories with her, and honestly, I understand that part, but it has been almost two years since we got married. I don’t think this should continue. What should I do?
– Upset Wife
Dear Upset: Even if your concerns were NOT valid (and I think they are), it is disrespectful for your husband to respond to your honesty by telling you to “wise up.”
You are wise enough to see his relationship with his ex-wife as an encroachment on your marriage. Your husband simply does not get to tell you what to think or how to feel.
Nor can you force him to exit from a relationship with his ex that he seems determined to continue.
What you both must do is find respectful ways to communicate and to engage in behavior that grows and strengthens your young marriage. You owe it to yourselves and, of course, you owe it to your child.

Many ex-spouses find positive ways to maintain a friendship, but if he hasn’t successfully emotionally separated from his ex, then she is entangled in your relationship. She is the uninvited guest at your family party. Simply put, both you and your husband need to put one another at the center of your relationship-world.
You will gain insight into marriage’s trickier dynamics by reading marriage researcher John Gottman and co-author Nan Silver’s classic primer: “The Seven Principles for Making Marriage Work: A Practical Guide from the Country’s Foremost Relationship Expert” (2015, Harmony). Read this on your own and discuss some of these principles with your husband. He should be inspired to read it, too.
Gottman’s research reveals that successful couples create indelible relationship imprints, and turn toward one another (not their exes) to tackle life’s little and large challenges.
Dear Amy: My neighbor “Sara” and I are not friends, but we are friendly, or so I thought.
We make small talk when we see each other, usually about our kids, our town, etc. Sometimes Sara speaks first, other times it’s me.
Sara and I have a few mutual friends on social media, so I sent her a friend request. She ignored it.
Her page is very public and she posts stuff often.
Additionally, she has about 350 FB friends, including other neighbors, teachers, town officials etc., so it’s not like she’s this extremely private person.
I feel like asking her, “Hey, what gives?”
Should I confront her regarding this slight, or should I let it go?
– Non-Friended Neighbor
Dear Neighbor: If you never, ever want to be connected with your neighbor on social media, then definitely confront her about it.
She may use social media differently than you do, filtering out people who post political content or who follow pages she disagrees with. She may like you as a neighbor, but not want you to know the particulars about her life or her own political opinions.
Many people keep “friend requests” in a queue and only click through requests periodically.
Or – possibly “Sara” is happy to chat with you over the backyard fence, but is otherwise not that interested in you. There is nothing wrong with this. It is the way of the world. In some ways, maintaining a cordial bit of friendly distance is the ideal situation for neighbors.
Continue to be personally friendly toward your neighbor, stop FB stalking her and – yes – let it go.
Dear Amy: Thank you for warning readers about the dangers of accidental nicotine exposure in the household, due to the popularity of vaping.
My husband was refilling his own device and spilled a small amount of vaping liquid on the floor. He didn’t clean it up, and our dog lapped it up. He was extremely sick. We almost lost him.
– Horrified
Dear Horrified: Concentrated nicotine in liquid form is extremely toxic. Your husband should be wearing gloves, avoid any spills (and thoroughly clean with a paper towel if he does spill), and store his refill liquid in a secure location.

'RHONJ' Star Melissa Gorga Now Understands Why Couples Get Divorced – Life & Style Weekly
Now she gets it! Back in 2013, Real Housewives of New Jersey star Melissa Gorga wrote a relationship advice book called Love Italian Style: The Secrets of My Hot and Happy Marriage, in which she gave women advice on treating their husband “like a king, so he’ll treat you like a queen.” But if you talked to Melissa today, she’d tell you her views on marriage have “crazily changed,” according to Entertainment Tonight, to the point where she revealed she and husband, Joe Gorga, have even “[hit] a moment” where she understood why couples get divorced.
The Gorgas have been doing RHONJ a long time, and until recently, Melissa didn’t think it would affect her and Joe’s marriage in the same way it did for other women in the Bravo franchise. “I’ve been on the show for eight years,” she told ET. “I was [always] like, ‘We’re good, we got this. I don’t know what everybody else’s problem is, all these Housewives are getting divorces’… and then I’m like, ‘Oh, I get this. OK, we’re hitting a moment.’” Good to know things get rocky for everyone, even a couple that seems as in love as these two do.

But Melissa’s views really have changed since writing her book, and it doesn’t seem like Joe loves it. “Like, I can’t believe it,” she told ET about how she doesn’t really vibe with the things she wrote in her book. “I’ll probably go back and read the book and go, ‘Yeah, no.’ And that’s a true fact. It’s one of the things that, I’m being very honest, I struggle a lot with Joe over that.”
Considering Melissa wrote her book from the point of view of a typical Italian wife, it makes sense that her views would change as she continued to grow as a woman in the public eye, and as an entrepreneur. “I was so stuck in and being a traditional Italian girl, being stuck in like, ‘No, that’s what I want to do. I want to be a mom who cooks and cleans, and my husband will provide for me and that’s what every lucky girl gets in life, and that’s what I got,” she revealed about her marriage with Joe.
Now, with her clothing line Envy, and her continued work as a singer and television personality, it’s all about keeping things equal for the couple. “I need [him] to respect my work, even though I’m gonna be in glam for two hours. It’s also part of my work. For him, it’s a struggle to understand. He’s like, ‘Your work is fun,’ and I’m like, ‘I’m working’… Just because his work is in construction, it’s not as fun, I would say, as my work. So we go back and forth on that and just the roles in the house,” she explained. Clearly, the changes in their relationship have had them working on things, especially in the midst of doing the whole reality show thing.

But for those of us who love Melissa and Joe as a couple, there isn’t anything to worry about. “We’re fighting really hard and I think at the end of the day you really have to have the true love for one another because if you don’t, you’re not gonna get through this,” she revealed to ET. “[He] and I truly do love one another, and we’re gonna fight for [our] love, our kids.” True love truly is the key.
We’re glad these two plan to keep working on things, because we love where this RHONJ star’s head is at!
