Millennials, Gen X committed to marriage and driving down divorce rates
LAS VEGAS (KTNV) –
It seems millennials are always being blamed for a lot of bad trends, but now it seems they along with Generation X are getting credit for something good – lowering the divorce rate.
According to the United States Census Bureau people under 45 are helping drive down the divorce rate.
Cristina and Geovanni Hernandez walked down the aisle for a second time Wednesday night at the Little White Wedding Chapel on Las Vegas Boulevard. It was their 10 year anniversary.
They are millennials who renewed their vows. While they personally are bucking the trend of millennials who are choosing to marry later; Geovanni said while their timing may be out of step with their peers,
“There’s the pressure of wanting to do social things and be out there still and travel,” Hernandez said.
He believes millennials are deeply invested in commitment.
“I personally wanted a family and to settle down,” Hernandez said.
According to census information Baby Boomers who married young like Geovanni and Cristina were more likely to have divorced and remarried.
Cristina believes that example made Gen X and Millennials pickier.
“I think they are having success when they wait because they don’t go through those struggles,” said Cristina.
She believes they are more conscious of the previous generations relationship failures.
“Personally for me taking advice from my elders,” said Cristina “You stick with it.”
In Las Vegas, a drive-through wedding ceremony is actually a thing, but experts aren’t surprised that the road to matrimony for millennials is longer and filled with more twists and turns.
“I just think they are savvier,” said Nancy Gabriel who sees the trend as a divorce mediator.
“I think it’s financial,” Gabriel said. “They are going to school establishing their financial histories, perhaps buying a house. They are certainly having kids and they are coming into my office. Not for divorces. More for parenting plans.”

Newly-Wedded Bliss! Josiah And Lauren Duggar Share A Steamy PDA Pic
It looks like their first spontaneous married adventure must’ve gone well, because Josiah Duggar and his new wife Lauren Swanson are back on Instagram and packing on the PDA. The young couple, who tied the knot in June, have certainly been getting more comfortable with each other since their wedding. Though they did break a few courtship rules on the way to the alter, they still managed to save their first kiss for marriage, and since then they’ve continued to practice. And now they’re joining in on the Duggar practice of sharing their PDA online.
The couple has posted kissing pics before. Their first Instagram as a married couple showed their silhouettes as they shared a ~steamy~ makeout session a month after their big day. The month after that, Lauren ‘grammed a romantic wedding photo of Si laying a big smooch on her, captioning it with a sweet message for her new husband’s birthday. And now, in September, they put up a picture of the recent bride kissing her groom on the cheek, adding a single heart emoji to the post.
They may only have been kissing for a few months, but it seems like the couple got the hang of things pretty much immediately. “It’s like two magnets,” Si said about their first kiss at their wedding — and it’s clear the attraction is there. Fans couldn’t help but notice how much he was beaming in the new shot.
“You can really see in his eyes how happy you guys are,” wrote one of the couple’s followers. “How sweet! You two are my new fave Duggar couple!” added another. Still more offered up a little marriage advice for the pair. “Take your time and just be a married couple,” read one comment. “No hurry to bring babies into the world. Enjoy each other first.”
But the Counting On couple’s eagle-eyed fans did notice one thing that was off about the photo — Lauren’s monogrammed shirt! “Lauren needs a need monogram now!!” they commented. “Gift idea, Siah?” You know, their three month anniversary is right around the corner. And if the Duggar son needs gift ideas, well, it sounds like he’ll find some great ones right in his Instagram comments.

Terrence Howard knows Taraji P. Henson well. The two play onscreen husband and wife in Fox’s hit series, Empire, which returns for its fifth season tonight.
But in real life, Henson is engaged to former NFL star Kelvin Hayden, and before she walks down the aisle her onscreen hubby has some advice for her.

“Never tell him no,” Howard advised Henson Monday night at the New York City premiere of Empire.
Judging by the look the 48-year-old actress gave Howard after his wise words, we’re not sure she’ll be taking his advice.

Still, fans of Empire can expect their onscreen characters, Cookie and Lucious, to be more on the same page in the fifth season of Empire. The co-stars told ESSENCE that Cookie and Lucious Lyon’s marriage is stronger than ever this time around.
“You can’t mess with true love like that,” Howard said, “[especially] when true love actually makes it’s way back to you. Lucious threw it away for seven years.”
Henson said that in season five, fans can expect to “see how the empire was built in the first place.”
Empire returns Wednesday night at 8 p.m. on Fox.
Amy Dickinson: New aunt wonders how often to see kiddos
Dear Amy: My husband and I are in our 20s. We have been married for two years.
My husband has three siblings. Each sibling has one child under the age of two.
I caught wind from my mother-in-law that one of my sisters-in-law isn’t too happy with us because we don’t see the kids often enough and don’t reach out often enough.
My husband’s family all live relatively close by, but they aren’t in daily contact.
I am an only child and have never had nieces and nephews before. My husband and I are expecting our first child soon and we own a business, so we are very busy during the week, and our weekends are consumed with remodeling the house to get ready for the baby. I just don’t think they realize that I’m not a stay-at-home mom, and we can’t take days off.
How often should we be reaching out to my sisters-in-law to either just check in or to make plans to see our nieces/nephews?
How do we make them understand that we’re not being mean, but we’re just busy? — Confused Only Child
Dear Confused: I’d like to offer a shout-out regarding the special and endearing experience of being an aunt (or uncle). This relationship offers so many opportunities for ancillary parenting: for enjoying, mentoring and loving children who are tangentially your own.
When you are a parent, you will very likely want other family members to develop a close relationship with your child. You should demonstrate toward these other parents and children the level of attention that you might like your child to receive.
And — because you have no experience as a sibling, parent, or aunt — you should fake it ‘til you make it.
If your mother-in-law passes along a critique, you should listen respectfully, glean whatever lesson you can from it and then consider making some changes if you are able.
What you should not do is get defensive, or offer up excuses about how busy you are.
There is no “correct” pattern or way to quantify contact with nearby family members, although you should make every effort to attend special occasions: birthdays, religious or school milestones and holidays (Halloween is a great time to pop by and see the littles in their costumes). Also connect with these parents on social media.
Even if you don’t see these family members very often, when you are with them you should lavish attention upon the child, show interest in the parents and follow up with a text or a call letting them know that their toddler is adorable/interesting/impressive/sweet/charming — and/or loved exactly as they are.
Dear Amy: I’ve been in a relationship with my husband for the last 18 years.
We’ve been married for eight years.
We have both been unfaithful.
My husband has stated that he’s not happy and doesn’t want to be married anymore.
How do I show him that things are different now, and save my marriage? — Desperate
Dear Desperate: You know the saying, “Change starts with you?” Well, if you’re lucky and work hard at it, change stays with you.
Most often, however, we humans make little inroads toward change — but then revert back to our noisy, messy selves.
In 18 years of togetherness, you and your husband have dealt with your humanity (your faults and frailty) by distracting yourselves with affairs. You two could turn things around with therapeutic work and with a mutual guarantee that you will dive in to, versus step out on, your problems.
But he’s done. You should acknowledge and apologize — in person and in writing — for the ways you’ve hurt him (don’t focus on the ways he has hurt you). You should guarantee that things will be different now, because you are different now, and ask him to consider staying with you.
The beauty of you changing is that now you get to be a better version of you, regardless of what your husband chooses to do.
